Landscape Park - Deventer

The assignment was to develop a new recreation/nature park for the citizens of Deventer. Deventer is a city next to the river the IJssel, and north of nature park The Veluwe. The city had the demand that  the park involved 1000ha of nature.

After the analyses of the area, climate changes, nature and fieldtrips, the following plan was made: A landscape which will have a local and small scaled food production for the area, this will take place in the so called "essengebied".

The river must expand with newly formed channels/flows to cope with climate changes. This has to do with extreme rainfall in the future, which means the river has to cope with more water in a short amount of time. This will be combined with a new nature area, which will be conected with the Veluwe.

In the more open landscape, there will be organic farming. In this landscape there will also be developed new elzenhakhout and rabattenbossen , which used to be in the area. They will collect water when there will be extreme rainfall and in times of drought, the collected water will be used for the local agriculure

With the use of fromer element with a new function: climate adaptive. There is formed a sustainable landscape park which can cope with climate changes, due to historical elements which are local to the landscape. This park will give place to recreation, working and living. This means the landscape transformed in a integral landscape which will be used by all users: people and nature will both using the landscape.

The Landscape park is located South-East of Deventer. In this park, there is an absolute dividing between agriculture and nature. The reason for those separate areas, is the corridor between the Veluwe and the River Area. Due to the corridor, big game such as Red Deer and Wild Boar will migrate from the poor Veluwe into the rich River valleys. This will increase the nature area, but can be a problem for the agriculture. Such a big animals will do a lot of damage to the cultivated crops,. When those areas will be separated there can be made a management plan to keep the animals in the nature area and reduce the damage they will bring to the crops. The nature area will partly be accessible for visitors and are partly rest areas/quiet zones for the nature.

The agricultural area, will be small parceled with a lot of woods and tree lanes which are common in the region. Together with the field edges, which will be used as a nature corridor and field protector, the area will have a natural and countryside appearance . Which would be appreciated by both visitors from Deventer as tourists. In the area, local produced foods will be sold to the visitors which will help them to understand the landscape. Overall the agricultural area and nature park, together would be called a Landscape Park.

Food Forests

The food forests will be located in the agricultural landscape, they form a bridge between the natural landscape and the agricultural landscape. A food forest can be seen as a apartment building, with multiple levels of foodproduction: small herbs and brushes on the ground with poultry and small cattle,  and above different sizes of fruit- and (wal)nut trees. These food forests simulate the natural forest situation for the plants.

On the image next to the text, it can be seen that there is a "hard line" between the food forests and the surrounding agriculture. This is because different bussinessmodels between both areas: World production vs. Local production combined with nature inclusive agriculture. In the food forests, there can be found open spots, which will be used for small scale agriculture: (grain and potato)fields and meadows.

Cross section of the Food forest A - A'

The cross section is made on the border between the Food forest and the meadows. In the corss section, the transition between the higher forest and the thicket can be seen. The higher trees in the cross section are trees such as Walntur- and Chestnut trees. The smaller trees are fruit trees, like apple- and pear trees. Those trees are followed up by the smaller trees/brushes such as the hazel. In the shrubberries can be found different fruit shrubs for fruit production like raspberries
